More Exploring

     This is going to be a quick -picture filled post.  I have several posts from this great area of Bellingham and hope that you have enjoyed them all!   Or will go back and enjoy them.  Since we are moving out of state in about 60 days--I have been trying to get all of the pictures of this beautiful area I can.  The cross country move and our new location will happily become my third blog series!  
     On this day our youngest had earned a day out-- with dinner.   He chose Subway.   There are so many of the sandwich shops in this area, I wanted to choose one were we could do a little exploring before we ate.  And we ended up down by the bay, and the outlet near The classic and elegant Bellwater Motel. 

   But first we made a detour downtown to the Alamo Apartments.   This is a classic old building near WWU and above the great downtown.  This building has a very rich history.  Although maybe not the most glamorous.  And is now a three story grouping of studio apartments.  The first time I lived in Bellingham, this is were I lived.  Anyway, one of the residents of these apartments painted a huge mural on the large outside wall of the building. 

 

This huge mural pictures many of the classic buildings that make this town great.

 

It was painted by a resident of the Alamo that was arrested years ago for painting graffiti.  And now is trying to give back to the community.

 

 

      The above is also at the Alamo, by the same artist.  And goes down the smaller wall.   If nothing else it shows how much it rains here. 


   
                                           Than it was time to go down to the bay.

    This coffee shop was closed --- but I thought the window reflections were great!  Than some quick exploring to work up an appetite. 

    Very close to here is an outlet of the Coast Guard.   And of course a large, busy marina.

     We than took off along the bay line.  And saw some great views. 

 

 

    I always try to capture views of the sun, because it is so rare this time of year. 

 

 

     You can just make out the statue in this pictures background.   For all of the brave sailors that went out, and never saw land again.

           This was shot in front of one of the many restaurants along the water.   A fountain trickles down all of the rocks and the bright light in the background is a flaming ball of fire.

Another Week Of Exploring Bellingham!

 

 



   In the next few days I hope to get some new fall pictures around the area.  I have shared some of my favorites in recent posts past.  But have a few more areas to explore before the wind claims all of the wonderful colors.   I have heard the Mount Baker area is extra beautiful right now.  I of course will have a full post about our family fun for Halloween.  I hope everyone has a safe and happy Halloween!   I would add a dry night to my wishes, but this is Washington, so good luck with that.  Another post coming very soon will be full of local web sights that I use all of the time to learn about all the events happening in our area.  I have many new concepts and posts in the works!

 

My next post will show case some of my favorite sunset pictures.  Mostly dealing with the bay.

 Today's post is all about exploring in the last week or so.  Events and trips that are note worthy or have offered some great pictures, but not worthy of an entire blog post of there own.   I hope you enjoy!  Last week we ventured down by the bay -a favorite place to explore for us all.  Our youngest ended up getting covered in mud and than getting hurt, so it turned into a short trip.  Luckily mom was home to offer a healing band-aid and a kiss or two!   I managed to snap some great shots before we ventured home.

Three of the tallest and perhaps coolest buildings in town.

 

Last week my wife and I had the privilege to join our youngest's class on a field trip to Mt Baker Theatre. 
In the off and on five years that I have lived here, I have never been inside the theatre. 

We along with many of the local grade school's enjoyed the first school performance of the season. 

It was great.   Sadly I did not take any pictures while in the building.

But it is an awesome building both inside and out.

And the performance was outstanding!

 

Lastly today I must brag that Halloween --tomorrow marks seven years of knowing my wife.

 

We will be focusing on the kiddos and "screening" there candy tomorrow.

We lock ourselves in our room and go through the candy and keep some of the best stuff.

We did manage to sneak away last week on a night with no kids.

 

Were we enjoyed a great evening at the Silver Reef Casino.

Ski To Sea 2012

      

                                                                 **"Get your race on!"**




    I have been so busy exploring and enjoying local activities and taking pictures, that I have been greatly slacking on posting about them.   Case and point---this blog.  This year was the 101st Ski to Sea.  And since it ends in our home town of Fairhaven, we had an easy walk to the fun!   This is an amazing race.  I have grown very "soft"  meaning my couch potato skills are taking over.  And I am in a shape, just not a good shape.  So just watching this race was, well exhausting!
     Held every Memorial Day weekend.  A limit of 500 Teams. A Relay Race of Seven Race Legs - Seven Different Sports -The course covers 90 Miles

The Ski to Sea Festival includes a 93.5 mile relay Race of seven venues from Mount Baker to Bellingham Bay encompassing seven different sports. The Festival also includes a community block party with music and food, a Junior Ski to Sea Race, a historical hometown parade, and other special events that provide a wide variety of entertainment and adventure for all who participate and cheer on the contenders.      But enough history and facts---lets look at some pictures and such!  

     

  The weekend before the Jr division has there own race.  And the carnival  sets up.  My wife has several family members that work for carnivals so we watched the crew set up.  It was very entertaining actually.  I had hoped to watch them tear down on Sunday night also, but we had scheduling conflicts.  Having three kids, this happens a lot!   

For whatever reason the corn dogs at the carnival are always the best!   

You can just make out the corn dog wagon behind our youngest in the above picture.  

I probably do not want to know what they do to these to make them so good---but Mmmmm! 

**Note**  You have to look for the corn dog wagon actually on the mid-way, not one outside of the rides, for the best taste.

Today's picture of the day!

My wife worked on carnival crews for years.   

This is in her past, but she could still work circles around much of the current crew.  

Here she is pictured in front of the last ride they set up that night.

We were not able to make that.

Saturday morning was the big parade. 

And we were greeted with full on sunshine!

After we had picked a great viewing spot, the boys and I took off to explore.  We had an hour before the parade actually started. 

    We ended up just down from the old city hall.   Wandering by the water and the park.

                                               Always a great place to skip rocks!

                                        And allowed for some more great pictures!

   About time for the parade to start!    This parade is always super great!  Although the kiddos were super sad that no candy was thrown from any floats.   

    Another great time to pull off a crime in Bellingham,   the police force is very busy with crowd control.

                          Not only do I ride the short bus to work, I drive it.....

                      Santa even made an appearance!     I bet that suit was hot.   

                                   But it is great practice for Christmas in July

   Sunday Fairhaven was full of people.   Sponge Bob is very happy that it is also the end of the race.
